The 2026 Olympic games in Milan Cortina just wrapped up and with the United States winning their most gold ever in a Winter Olympics, one event stood out from the rest: the United States have not won a gold medal in men's hockey since the "Miracle On Ice” Olympics in 1980. Now, and of the Russians, the US has a new rival, the Canadians.

The Olympics are starting to get routine for the United States. This one stands out because  the US team was undoubtedly outmanned. The Canadian team was one of the best to ever hit the ice being loaded with stars such as Nathan Mackinnon, Sydney Crosby, Cale Makar and Connor McDavid, just to name a few. They outscored opponents by maintaining an average of 5 goals a game while only allowing 1.5 goals a game and having a .917 save percentage according to Yahoo Sports.

Now, if the Canadian team was so good and was overall a better team especially, in the gold medal game against the US outshooting them 42-28, then how they lost well needs explaining. The answer is because goalie Connor Hellebuyck delivered a legendary performance, stopping 41 of 42 shots (.976 SV%) according to ESPN. His most critical save was a desperation stick-paddle stop on a point-blank chance by Canada's Devon Toews in the third period, saving the US and allowing the game to go to overtime and the "Golden Goal¨ to be scored by New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes.

With the US securing gold this year, what does this mean for the future of USA hockey? The United States is currently 3rd all time in Olympic medals in hockey with eleven according to The Athletic  trailing behind Canada (16)  and the USSR/Russia (14). However, the United States has shown that they can compete for a gold with their current stars Quinn Hughes, Auston Matthews, Charlie McAvoy and brothers Brady and Matthew Tkachuk, along with producing top tier prospects such as James Hagens,Logan Hensler, JP Hulpert and Brady Knowling.

These prospects and the current players for team USA have shown why they are a serious contender for the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps and how they can compete for their 4th gold medal in team history with excellent goaltending, clutch scoring, and a future of the sport that can help them reach that goal.
