Minga System: Yay or Nay?

Updated: 2 days ago

By Izzy W.

Through the 22-23 school year Mountain Range had introduced a new system of hall passes that were all online. You fill out the pass sign off on the teacher who approved it and done, no more physical passes being brought to the bathroom, water fountain, etc.

Although the 24-25 school year still has the Minga hall passes this year, a new tardy system was introduced. This system basically requires all teachers to shut the doors right as the bell is done ringing, any student in the hall will then have to find a teacher, dean, principal or any working staff in the hallway to be given a tardy pass by entering the students ID number. This new system not only gives a tardy pass but also sends a text message to the students parents in the matter of seconds saying they were late.

This new system has had many many students and teacher opinions, a lot of the students are upset with it but the teachers are almost 50/50.

When talking to Mr.Wimmer a photo and business teacher here at The Mountain says, “As it comes to the passes I like it I can always see whos out of the room especially during photo” but in regards to the new system Mr.Wimmer states, “I get it because there are consequences to being late in life, I do believe its too late for the older students to get adjusted to it, but morally I am just glad the people in class show up”.

On the other hand, Joshua H. a senior here at the mountain states, “I thought originally it was a good idea, it kept people out of the halls and managed people leaving class all the time. For the tardy system I personally think it's just not effective especially during 1st hour. I mean no matter how early you leave for school the traffic is awful, I think there should be some leeway. I think it has the potential to be an effective positive system. I also think some kids who typically show up for class later just end up ditching and not going at all. I think they just need to be adjusted a bit.”

Ms.Rigili, an art teacher at Mountain Range, also agrees with Mr.Wimmer in regards to everything, “I think the system has some tweaks to make but if we continue to implement it continuing on with the year, I think it’ll make some good habits”.

Students seem to all have the same opinions on this new system, 1st hour is sometimes uncontrollable to get to on time and sometimes walking from gym class or weights all the way to math is even more difficult. Another very popular answer was the fact that not only traffic to get inside the school but the hallway traffic, Nelle A. a senior states “all the freshman stand in the middle of the hallway and talk not even just freshman, I’ve gotten a couple tardy warnings just because some people just stand and stay.

Overall, the new system could be an effective system to get all tardy’s under control, but while everybody is getting used to it maybe some new picks and nits will be added to make it an overall better system and fair for all students here at The Mountain.
