Opinion: Why the Snow White Remake Flopped

Disney’s 2025 Snow White remake might just go down as one of the worst mistakes in the studio's history. What was supposed to be a modern retelling of an old and beloved movie came out to be a disaster with awkward acting and a ton of CGI. This movie shows how Disney thinks CGI is the equivalent of duck tape and that enough of it will fix anything, even the Snow White remake. The remake stripped all of the magic away that the original possessed but instead shoved a ton of political correctness in place of it.

One of the biggest outcries against the movie was the casting. Many critics point out that although many of the dwarves themselves were CGI, disney still hired an actor with dwarfism to play a dwarf. Yet others criticize that the Snow White actress was’t “snow white”. Comments on the Snow White trailer include this: ”The only snow that’s white here is the one Disney’s executives keep snorting.” With the trailer receiving more than 2 million dislikes and the comments section not holding back it. The movie itself wasn’t the biggest failure either. With tensions between Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot were extremely high. Zegler took every possible opportunity to exclude Gal as Rachel is pro Palestinian while Gal is Israeli. Not only was she having uneasy relationships with the rest of the cast, she posted many instagram posts telling entire political audiences not to come watch the movie. She started mixing her personal life into the Snow White movie, angering a lot of people causing movie theatres to be completely empty during screenings of Snow White.

After the movie trailer got hit with a ton of backlash, Rachel posted on Instagram saying that there were going to be lines to go watch Snow White. This aged perfectly as even when she went to see the movie herself, she and her friends were the only ones in a giant theatre. Although many might say they rented the movie theatre, Zegler posted a video of them buying tickets with other people discrediting this theory.

The numbers for this movie were just terrible. It took about 300 million USD to create this movie while it has only made 170 million USD. This is absolutely terrible, in comparison, Dumbo made about 300 million USD worldwide. This money problem caused the Tangled remake to be postponed since they can’t afford to do it having lost this much money. With a 1.6 rating on IMDb it questions whether they should remove this movie from existence whatsoever. Snow White had a lower rating than the live action DBZ movie.

Overall with the completely different plot they should've made this movie under a different name. Playing on nostalgia is the only factor that this movie has going for it. This is a big fall from where Disney once stood. Walt Disney is probably rolling in his grave after they absolutely destroyed his magic and beautiful story.
