Social Surge of Meta Glasses at MRHS

By Ali P.

Ray Ban Metas are high-tech everyday eyewear that are becoming more popular among students because they contain image and video features capturing every moment hands free, open ear audio experiencing premium audio while keeping conversations and ambient audio in ear shot, touch control with the ability to seamlessly control music, as well as taking calls with responsive touch controls. The most notable feature that has bemused many is the Meta AI feature. Instead of having to pull out a phone, students can use the glasses to record videos, listen to music, answer calls and more.
One of the biggest reasons students use the glasses is for music, Senior Omar V. states “I just listen to music in class.” The speakers allow the students to listen to music while still being able to hear what is happening around them. The camera also makes recording videos easier because students don't have to hold their phones while recording
Senior Gio M. says “I use them to record videos because it’s kind of fun.” Being able to record hands free can make it easier to capture random moments with friends, at school or during activities. The glasses can also be used for different activities.” Senior Sophia S. said “I own the Oakley ones for football.” Students can use the glasses depending on their own interests, whether that is recording sports, listening to music or just capturing moments throughout the day.
However the glasses also bring up some concerns, especially when it comes to privacy, because the camera is built into the glasses, someone could potentially be recorded without realizing it. Counselor Jason Matthies shared his thoughts stating “I don't know, I think I trust students for the most part.”
Meta glasses are becoming another way students at MRHS use technology in their everyday lives. With music, videos and other features all in one pair of glasses, it is easy to see why more students are becoming interested in them.
