Pie in the Eye Returns to MRHS

The Mountain Range Mustangs staff and students are hosting the yearly Pie in the Eye fundraiser for Make a Wish on October 1st , 2026 in the MRHS gym during the homecoming assembly.

For those who don’t know, Pie in the Eye is a fundraising competition between teachers and students at MRHS. Each team tries to raise more funds than their competitors, with the losing side getting pied in the face during the homecoming assembly.

This year’s wish kid is Kayhan, a bright 10 year old. His wish is to go on a cruise with his family, and that wish will come true through the help of this event. Kayhan has many interests spanning from history subjects like WW2, the Titanic tragedy, and even ancient Egypt. Along with this, he also enjoys countless fun hobbies: cooking, baking, science kits, skiing, painting, drawing, playing piano, and building LEGOs. Kayhan has a type of blood cancer, lymphoma, that primarily affects the white blood cells. 

DECA advisor Hillary Wimmer explained Pie in the Eye started 2006 the first year MRHS opened, “only when we had sophomores and freshmen.” The DECA students put in so much work to make this possible, lots of advance planning, raising enough money and making it special, Wimmer stated. “It's a fun way to see leaders grow.” Wimmer also affirmed that the Make a Wish kid is randomly chosen and for the kid they try to make all the wishes come true and support their wishes and even add themes at the homecoming assembly to make it feel special.

Additionally, “The Make-a-Wish assembly takes MRHS students and staff months in advance to plan,”Wimmer stated. “There's a lot of coordination involved. It takes us months behind the

scenes to practice, rehearse the assembly, plan where props go, and order costumes.” She

emphasized the dedication that MRHS students and staff use to ensure the Make-a-Wish charity assembly runs smoothly.

Many Mountain Range students that are involved in this fundraiser had many positive things to say about their experience.. Britnee 9th grader says she’s participating because “ I would love to help make someone's wish come true”. Britnee is doing this by selling ribbon roses to students around the school, although she did say it is harder to get customers or even find people that are interested in what she’s selling that isn’t food.

There are also many faculty members who love this fundraiser. Social Studies teacher Mr.

Zachary Butte is participating this year competing against Juniors Kendall S. and

Raelynn J. Mr.Butte loves to help “Whomever, whenever,” he stated. “My favorite part so far

is getting to see the generosity and compassion of the student body.” Butte also

shared that he has had so many students come up and buy goodies from him to share

with their friends and that it brightens his day.

Since Kayhan’s wish is to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise,  during the assembly Wimmer is hoping to see,“Hawaiian surf (outfits), flip-flops, sunglasses on your head to make it kinda like a vacation for him”. Excitement is continuing to build around the building as the assembly nears, and all students are encouraged to have their vacation outfit ready to make it a special day for Kayhan on October 1.
