As the winter sports season kicks off, an MRHS sport to keep an eye out on is the Boys Basketball team. With a new and experienced Head Coach in Byrom Gray, one very important Varsity starter returning, a very young team, and other pieces and parts moving around this is the sport to be around this winter.
As the 2024-2025 MRHS team went 11-12 with only a rotation consisting of 7 players, 1 being a freshman. It definitely was an experiment but ultimately almost worked out. With finishing second in league and only missing 1s and being in the playoffs by a buzzer beater win vs. Boulder.
“I mean the season didn’t go as planned for sure. We could’ve done way better and made the playoffs easily.” states, Preston B.(12th) when talking about last season's opportunity.
With Preston being the #1 option on this team. Preston is eyeing leading his team to win a league championship, to reach 1k points which would be the first male basketball player to do so. Preston was also an All State Honorable Mention Player last season.
“Our team is very young, there's going to be mistakes, and there's going to be trials and tribulations but I believe in my team and know what they can do.” says Gianni W.(12th) who is going to have an important role this season including being a team captain along with Preston.
Some losses from last year will be Coach Kev, who stepped down from last season. A few others are Jeremiah C. (12th) and Jelani B.(12th) who both transferred to rival Horizon, and seniors like Moses W.(Grad.) who led the team in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks,
The season Kicks off on Wednesday 12/3 at home Vs. Arapahoe and 7pm tipoff with a theme of Blackout for the student section. Keep an eye out on the Boys Basketball team.
