Everyday after lunch, the MRHS campus is left filled with trash in every corner of the school, leaving janitors to spend an extra hour cleaning up after students. Trash can be found anywhere, from inside of the cafeteria to outside of the school building, with food left behind by students.

MRHS Janitor, Richard Langlois, says that taking time to pick up extra trash “takes time away from helping staff and students.” He also adds on to say that the most common trash he sees lying around are slushies and chicken served in a box. The slushy tabs from the packaging are dropped underneath the lunch tables and the boxes are left behind from students.

Student Senior AJ V. brings up how seeing the leftover trash puts her into an annoyed mood, adding that “It feels messy,” and “It’s not hard to throw away,”. Trash is not just an inconvenience for janitors, but also for students who feel put-off from all of the trash being carelessly thrown around campus.

Junior Taylor C, who is currently taking a forensics course, complains that trash all around the campus makes it difficult for her to tell the difference between what is evidence in a case and what isn’t. She describes how the litter

is "unnecessary and annoying”. Litter interferes with schoolwork and complicates assignments for classes like forensics.

Meanwhile, Campus Security Officer, Ernesto Munguia says that the reason as to why students leave behind so much trash is because of the lack of discipline from parents at home. He believes that it is a parent's responsibility to teach their children to throw away their trash properly.

Staff and students can collectively agree that more trash is left behind by lazy students. So to do some good and make the janitor’s job easier, it’s time to pick up some trash and take accountability.
