Front Range League Wrestling Tournament Results

by Iker A.F.

On Saturday, January 27th, Prairie View High School hosted the Front Range League tournament where four of our wrestlers placed. In a very competitive league dominated by some of the best wrestling programs in the state at the 5A and 4A classes, MRHS held its own. Brighton and Poudre both rank top ten in 5A while Broomfield currently ranks 10 in 4A. Here’s how the wrestlers fared:

  • Chris A. at 106 lbs weight class won his first match against a Fort Collins opponent in the first round but was defeated by a tough Loveland opponent 6-4 in the second round. He was defeated once again after two byes in the back side of the bracket against Legacy by major decision 11-2.

  • At 132 lbs, Iker A. F. received a bye in the first round and wrestled a challenging opponent from Erie and lost 8-4. In the backside of the bracket, he faced Fort Collins and won by major decision 13-2. His day was ended early by Loveland who defeated him by fall in the first period.

  • For the 144 lbs weight class, Joaquin H. was defeated by Monarch in the first round by fall in the first period. Joaquin defeated Horizon in the backside of the bracket by fall in the second period. His day was ended early by a very challenging opponent from Fossil Ridge by fall in the third period.

  • Luis M. wrestled at 150 lbs and lost by fall in the second period against Broomfield. He defeated Northglenn in the backside by decision 13-7, but was taken out by Legacy by fall in the second period.

  • Sylas S. at 157 lbs lost to Poudre in the first round by fall in the first period. He was defeated by Brighton in the second period by fall after a bye.

  • At 175 lbs, Leo H. lost to Horizon in the first period by fall. He defeated Brighton by fall in the first period. His day was ended early after losing to Poudre by fall in the second period.

  • At 190 lbs, Carson C. was defeated twice in the second period by fall by Fairview and Broomfield.

  • For the 285 weight class, Sawyer T. was also defeated twice. Horizon beat him in the second period by fall and Loveland defeated him in the first also by fall.

However, MRHS wrestling did have four placers at the league tournament. Gionni A. at 113 lbs,

Angelo M. at 120 lbs, Angelo R. at 126 lbs, and Zac C. at 138 lbs all placed top five.

  • Gionni A. won his first three matches by decision and major decision to make it to the finals where he was defeated by Brighton by decision 7-1. He took second place and won second team all-conference.

  • Zac C. won his first three matches by fall and decision and made it to the finals where he was defeated by fall in the first period by Poudre. He also won second place and won second team all-conference.

  • Angelo M. received a first round bye and was defeated by Brighton to major decision. He defeated Horizon by fall in the first period and defeated Rocky Mountain by decision in the backside of the bracket. He won by forfeit to go to the third place match where he was defeated by fall in the second period to Poudre. He took fourth place.

  • Angelo R. received a first round bye and was defeated by Fort Collins by decision. He defeated Boulder by fall in the first period and Broomfield by decision 7-5. He lost to Fossil Ridge by decision 4-1. He defeated Monarch by major decision 10-1 in the fifth place match.

Overall Mountain Range finished tenth out of 16 schools at leagues right behind Monarch. This

tournament prepared MRHS wrestling for the regional tournament where the top four at each

weight class qualify for the state championships. With the season coming to a close with senior night and one more tournament before regionals, the wrestling team has a positive outlook.
