Lately, a lot of schools in Colorado have started making stricter rules about phones. By 2026, every school district has to have a phone policy in place, which means students should expect changes no matter where they go. Some schools are already making kids keep their phones in their backpacks or even locking them up until the end of the day. For younger grades the rules are usually the strictest, while high school students sometimes still get to use phones during lunch or passing periods.

The main reason schools are doing this is because phones are a huge distraction in class. Teachers say it’s hard for students to stay focused when they’re always checking messages or scrolling through apps. Schools also believe that limiting phone use can help improve grades, cut down on drama and bullying, and even make students feel less stressed. Another goal is to get people to talk to each other more instead of spending all their free time on screens.

Here at Mountain Range, the new policy is clear,  no phones or headphones in class. Students get one warning, and if it happens again, their phone gets taken away. If the problem keeps going, the situation will escalate with stronger consequences.

Not everyone likes the new rules though. Some parents are worried about not being able to reach their kids in an emergency, and a lot of students say they need their phones for work, sports, or family. “I get that phones can be distracting, but sometimes I need mine to check in with my job after school,” said one junior who asked not to be named. Marcus B. added, “Honestly it’s kind of nice not having my phone in class because I actually pay more attention, but it’s annoying when I can’t use it at lunch.” Teachers also admit it’s tough to make sure everyone actually follows the rules.

Even with the arguments, these changes are moving forward. By 2026 every Colorado school will have a policy in place, and phones won’t be used the same way they have been before. Be sure to follow the school policy and respect your teachers and administrators as these rules are put into place.
